Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Trauma-Informed Practices: Strategies for the School Practitioner
In this session, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) theory and tools are highlighted as an effective intervention for burnout and trauma-related employment stress (TRES) among school staff. This presentation is skills-based and interactive in nature. Current research surrounding burnout and TRES, along with instruction regarding specific, evidence-based ACT strategies to target individual burnout and TRES effects, will be the focus. Participants will leave with hands-on, practical skills that they can begin to use immediately both personally and within the institutions wherein they work.

Melissa L. Holland, PhD, is a Professor of School Psychology at the California State University, Sacramento (CSUS) and has a private practice specializing in work with children, adolescents, and their families. She is both a licensed clinical psychologist and a certified school psychologist. Her publications and presentations focus on the emotional health of children and burnout and compassion fatigue for providers in the helping professions. She acts as a consultant in schools on the topic of social emotional learning and the use of mindfulness, cognitive, and behavioral strategies with students. She has worked extensively in the area of trauma and mental health in the schools, including clinical work, trainings for school districts, and research-related activities.
This course meets the qualifications for 3 hours of continuing education credit for LEPs, LMFTs, LPCCs and LCSWs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. This course also qualifies for 3 hours of continuing professional development for Nationally Certified School Psychologists, under provider number 1025. CASP maintains responsibility for the program and its content.
